Do You Need a Retaining Wall? A Guide for Jacksonville Homeowners

Most people think of retaining walls as something for steep hillsides. But in Jacksonville and across Northeast Florida, retaining walls solve everyday problems on fairly flat lots too — soil washing onto the driveway after a storm, garden beds spilling over the edge of a patio, or a backyard that never feels quite level enough to use.
A well-planned retaining wall can fix those problems and add usable space, seating, and structure to your yard at the same time. Here's how to tell if you need one, what a retaining wall actually does, and some examples from projects we've completed around Jacksonville and St. Johns County.
What Does a Retaining Wall Do?
A retaining wall holds soil in place where the ground changes height. By holding back that soil, it lets you create flat, usable areas on either side. In a residential yard, retaining walls are often used to:
- Keep garden and plant bed soil from washing onto pavers, walkways, or driveways
- Create a level area for a paver patio on a sloped or uneven yard
- Define the edge of a driveway or entry
- Add built-in seating around a patio or fire pit
- Work together with drainage to help direct water away from the home
Signs Your Yard Might Need a Retaining Wall
Not sure if a wall is the right fix? These are some of the most common signs we see in Northeast Florida yards:
- Soil or mulch washes out after heavy rain. If you're sweeping dirt off the driveway or patio after every summer storm, the soil next to it needs to be held in place.
- Plant beds are spilling over. Beds that sit higher than the surrounding pavers slowly slump onto them over time.
- Part of the yard is too sloped to use. A wall can turn a slope into a flat area for a patio, seating, or play space.
- Water collects in the same spots. A retaining wall paired with proper drainage can help manage where water goes.
- The yard feels unfinished. Low walls add structure and help separate lawn, beds, and hardscape into clear spaces.
Below are a few real examples from projects we've completed across Jacksonville and St. Johns County.
1. A Driveway Wall With a French Drain in Jacksonville
In the Lakewood neighborhood of Jacksonville, we installed a new paver driveway with a low retaining wall running along its side, plus a paver walkway to the front entry. We also installed a 200-foot French drain on the property to carry water away. Handling the driveway, the wall, and the drainage in the same project meant all three were planned to work together — which matters in Jacksonville, where summer storms put a steady load on driveways and side yards.
Best for: homeowners dealing with runoff along a driveway or side yard.
2. A Curved Wall That Doubles as a Bench
For another Jacksonville homeowner, we built a curved retaining wall around a Tremron Autumn Blend paver patio. The wall doubles as seating, so the bench is part of the wall itself, and a fire pit sits inside the curve. It's a good example of a retaining wall doing more than one job: holding the grade and creating a gathering space.
Best for: homeowners who want structure and seating in one feature.
3. A Garden Wall With Drainage in Vilano Beach
In Vilano Beach, we built a garden retaining wall next to a new paver patio and steps. The wall holds the plantings in place, and we finished it with crushed white marble for easy maintenance and proper drainage. The marble helps water drain instead of pooling against the wall and pavers — an important detail this close to the coast.
Best for: raised garden beds next to a patio or walkway.
4. A Low Wall Along a Driveway in Ponte Vedra Beach
In the TPC Sawgrass area of Ponte Vedra Beach, we installed a paver patio, driveway, and steps, with a low retaining wall running alongside the curved driveway. The wall, driveway, and patio share the same warm brown and tan paver tones, so the front of the home reads as one finished space.
Best for: front yards where the driveway, entry, and landscaping need to feel connected.
Why Drainage Matters With Every Retaining Wall
A retaining wall holds back soil — but it also holds back water. When heavy rain soaks the soil behind a wall, that water needs somewhere to go. Without a plan for drainage, water can build up behind the wall, wash out soil, or pool against pavers.
That's why we plan drainage as part of the wall, not as an afterthought. Depending on the site, that might include gravel behind the wall, a French drain, or a drainage stone finish like the crushed marble in our Vilano Beach project. Choosing Materials for a Retaining Wall
Retaining wall block comes in many colors and textures, from natural stone looks to clean, modern finishes. The best choice usually ties back to the pavers on your patio, driveway, or walkway so the whole yard looks planned together. In one of our St. Augustine projects, for example, a tan and gray stone-look wall block matches the patio pavers.
Pavers and wall block hold up well to Northeast Florida's sun, humidity, and heavy rain. If you're not sure which look fits your home, our design services can help you plan the wall and the surrounding hardscape together.
Before You Build: A Few Things to Check
A little planning up front helps the project go smoothly. Before you build a retaining wall, check these:
- Height: Low garden and seat walls are the most common in residential yards. Taller walls may come with extra building requirements, so check local rules early.
- HOA guidelines: Many Jacksonville and St. Johns County neighborhoods have rules about hardscape and landscaping changes.
- Utilities: Know where underground lines run before any digging starts.
- Plantings: Plan what will go in the beds behind the wall. Our post on native plants vs. traditional landscaping can help, and our landscaping and outdoor living team can plant the beds as part of the same project.
